Library Director, Parker Memorial Library (Dracut)
Position Summary: The Library Director provides strategic leadership and overall administration of the M.G. Parker Memorial Library. The Director oversees library services, programs, operations, staffing, budgeting, and community engagement to ensure high-quality, accessible services for residents. Work includes planning, implementing, and evaluating library services; developing the library’s collection and technology infrastructure; and promoting a welcoming, inclusive environment. The Director ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including Board of Library Trustees policies, Massachusetts General Laws, Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) regulations, and relevant Town bylaws.
Supervision: Under the administrative and policy direction of the Board of Library Trustees, the Director works from municipal and departmental policies, practices, and procedures and is responsible for establishing short- and long-range goals and objectives, setting performance standards, and ensuring department results. In matters specifically relating to the clarification, interpretation, or exception to Town or State policy; personnel regulations; pay rates; town-wide staffing and benefits implementation; union regulations and grievances; and financial issues associated with the Town’s accounting processes, the Director receives input and guidance from the Town Manager on all appropriate procedures and practices. The Director exercises independent judgment in daily operations while maintaining communication and alignment with both the Board of Library Trustees and the Town Manager.
Supervisory Responsibility: Responsible for supervising all library personnel, including full-time and part-time employees, volunteers, and Town Tax Relief program participants. The Director oversees and ensures the success of all library programs and services through effective delegation and staff development. The Director defines program objectives, determines required work operations, allocates financial and staffing resources, reports on outcomes, and recommends new goals. Responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining staff; coordinating library activities within the department and with other Town departments; preparing and defending budget and personnel requests; and delegating tasks to supervisors and ensuring accountability.

· This is a full-time position (35 hours per week). Regular schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

· The position requires handling confidential patron records in compliance with applicable privacy laws and organizational policies.

Education & Experience:
· Master’s in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution required.
· Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible public library experience, including at least one year in a supervisory role; union environment experience preferred.
· Professional understanding of public library theory, practices, and ethics, including the ALA Code of Ethics, Library Bill of Rights, and Freedom to Read Statement.
· Familiarity with current library automation systems and emerging technologies.
· Ability to provide excellent patron service and maintain confidentiality.
· Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, exercise judgment, and maintain positive working relationships.
· Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
· Proficiency with office software and ability to learn new applications.
