Acquisitions Librarian, Chicopee Public Library (Chicopee)

Summary: The Acquisitions Librarian co-manages the Technical Services Department with the Cataloger to accomplish the purchase, cataloging, processing, and distribution of all physical materials for the library. Responsible for the acquisition of physical materials in all formats for the main library and branches. Maintains the physical collection through reorganizations, scheduling ongoing weeding of outdated or damaged titles, and looking for new opportunities or emerging needs in organization or management of the collection. Co-supervises and trains library associates in the performance of technical service duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Selects items in categories of adult titles and oversees librarians selecting in other categories of adult titles to ensure a relevant, well-rounded, and diverse collection of materials, using the library’s Collection Development Policy as a guide

·         Acquires all physical library materials with established vendors using the Evergreen Acquisitions Module

·         Works with the Director to select and negotiate with vendors, and acts as liaison to established vendors

·         Works directly with vendors to resolve a variety of routine and non-routine issues and order discrepancies

·         Maintains records for electronic ordering process

·         Receives materials, matches against invoices, and resolves discrepancies

·         Maintains vendor file

·         Assists in cataloging and processing of items as needed

·         Oversees and directs weeding projects as well as collection evaluations and reorganizations to maintain a current, relevant collection that is accessible to our patrons

·         Assists the Office Administrator in financial functions in Evergreen’s Acquisitions Module using fund codes and vendor codes

·         Trains and supervises library associates and library volunteers performing technical services duties

·         Works with the Director and other senior library staff to review and update the library’s Collection Development Policy as needed

·         Fills in as needed at all public service desks

·         Performs related work as required

·         Supervises library staff while they are performing technical services duties

·         Supervises volunteers in the performance of technical services duties

Qualifications

·         Thorough knowledge of Evergreen’s acquisitions, cataloging, and serials modules as well as library policies and procedures

·         Ability to synthesize information from reviews in professional journals and coverage in popular media as well as the interests of our patrons and our community to select items for the library’s collection that will be relevant, well-rounded, and diverse

·         Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic maintenance standards and practice, including Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, subordinates, officials of other agencies, and the general public

·         Ability to work effectively within time constraints and to meet deadlines

·         Comprehensive computer skills in all office programs and software applications supportive of library presentations and applications

·         Ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize workflow

·         Ability to work independently and adapt to changing technologies

Education and/or Experience: A Bachelor’s degree is required, a Masters in Library and Information Science (or substantial progress toward an MLIS) preferred, and two years demonstrated experience in acquisitions/cataloging. Experience with Evergreen, specifically the Acquisitions Module, preferred.

Salary Notes

35 hours/week with a six-month increase and annual step/pay increases.
