Biosciences Library Liaiso, MIT Libraries (Cambridge)
The MIT Libraries seek a collaborative, dynamic, and innovative professional to join our team as Library Liaison for Biosciences. This position provides library support for the MIT departments, labs, centers and institutes (DLCIs) in biology, biological engineering, and brain and cognitive sciences. The Library Liaison will join the Research and Learning Directorate, reporting to the Department Head for Liaison, Instruction, and Reference Services (LIRS).
MIT has some of the world's leading researchers and educators, working across disciplines in areas ranging from synthetic biology to microfluidics to robotics. In more than two dozen DLCIs, MIT researchers are pioneering innovative, data-intensive and computational approaches to global challenges such as AI and climate change, and are actively fostering open science and data sharing, international collaborations, and ethical technology design and deployment.
The Library Liaison for Biosciences will engage in research support, teaching and enrichment across campus, collaborating with research teams, faculty, postdocs and students. The incoming librarian will work jointly with MIT science and engineering librarians, and participate or lead in service and infrastructure development projects. RESPONSIBILITIES
-The Library Liaison for Biosciences, working with a talented and engaged team to coordinate, shape, and deliver services, will:
-Use outreach strategies for developing relationships and partnerships with faculty and researchers to optimize the impact of library expertise and services.
-Help researchers find and manage information and data, and critically evaluate and use research tools, platforms, and infrastructure.
-Apply knowledge of trends in science and engineering research and teaching to service delivery and design.
-Develop library collections in relevant disciplines and support initiatives in open access and open data.
-Teach in the library program on critical information skills, helping students understand the social consequences of how data and information are used, created, and shared.
-Engage in systematic, ongoing learning activities related to research methods, to influence outcomes for equity, reproducibility, and open science.
-Participate in or lead project teams and committees at department or Libraries’ level, and foster inclusion and team success by using best practice tools and techniques.
-Participate as a member in LIRS Science & Engineering Community of Practice.
-Contribute to professional discourse regarding open, reproducible, data-intensive and computational research as related to evolving library services.
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
An advanced degree in relevant disciplines or an MLS/MLIS.
A minimum of 3 years relevant experience, including experience working with data and scholarly information in research.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in science and engineering contexts:
Experience providing research support and applying outreach strategies for developing relationships and partnerships with researchers and research teams, and capacity to adapt strategies for the MIT context.
Experience with various tools and platforms for collaborative research, such as GitHub, electronic lab notebooks, open-source and open science tools, and data repositories and pipelines.
Experience in teaching and designing learning activities to meet learning outcomes.
Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and experience with applying those principles to provision of services.
Knowledge of biosciences and engineering literature and resources with the ability to select materials for library collections according to campus needs.
Strong collaborative, organizational and communication skills across multiple contexts, such as working with teams, leading and participating in meetings, giving reports and presentations, and developing proposals with numerous, diverse stakeholders.
We expect the candidate to be stronger in some qualifications listed above than others. Enthusiasm and self-reflection about areas for learning and growth are desirable, as we are committed to helping our future colleague expand their skills and impact, as well as learning from their areas of strength.
Preferred:
Experience working with and managing data sets in biosciences, and familiarity with tools used for cleaning data, version control, documentation, and analysis.
Familiarity with research trends and with ethical, legal, and policy issues in science and engineering.
Familiarity with tools and protocols for reproducible research and data analysis.
