Library Technician, Plymouth Public Library (Plymouth)

Summary

Performs varied, routine clerical and public service work in connection with one or more library departments; performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions

Performs customer service to patrons, including checking materials in and out, reserving books, collecting and posting fees, registering patrons for cards and programs, and answers questions.

Processes book holds that patrons have requested.  Items are received in the network delivery daily for patrons and items are also returned by other libraries.  Processes overdue notices, alerts and other library processes.

Prints morning reports, phone lists for calling patrons for overdue notices and holds.

Balances the cash drawers.

Empties the overnight book drop and checks all items in.

Participates in shelving and straightening of library materials.

Assists patrons in database searches to locate information.

Fills outgoing bins with items going to other libraries and empties the incoming bins of items being returned.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates. 

Works with a Librarian to plan, publicize, implement, and evaluate programs and activities both at the libraries and at off-site locations.

Maintains a strong understanding of library services and policies.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

High School graduate; one year of clerical or library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Knowledge:   Knowledge of professional library functions, online services and databases used in a library setting.  Working knowledge of English grammar, spelling and basic math.  Strong knowledge of personal computers, familiarity with the Internet and Office computer software.

Ability:   Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with employees, the public, and to work independently.  Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.  Ability to work well within a group and must have a sense of humor. Ability to multi-task and follow written and verbal instruction.   Ability to operate a variety of office equipment and to understand and use office computer software, hardware and online services.

Skill:  Excellent oral communication and customer service skills.  Skill in handling a great many details, some simultaneously with accuracy.  Proficient computer skills.
