Head Librarian, Metadata Services, Boston College Libraries (Boston)

The Head Librarian, Metadata Services directly supervises 5 full-time Librarians responsible for original and special collections cataloging and metadata enhancement. The Head position also has oversight through a direct report, for coordination of the work of 5 metadata support staff. The work of the metadata support staff/copy catalogers includes management of new incoming materials, special and ongoing descriptive metadata projects, and routine copy cataloging and physical processing of materials for the O’Neill Library and some of the special libraries. 

The Head Librarian for Metadata Services leads problem resolution and decision making for the department, seeks staff development opportunities, and helps create and provide training/documentation for department staff. In consultation with the AUL for Technology and Discovery Services, the Head sets and implements the strategic direction of the department's work, sets priorities for staff work, establishes service benchmarks, and manages/monitors project queueing for the department. The Head also collaborates with staff in the department and across the Libraries to develop and maintain policy and practices related to metadata creation and enhancement, metadata harvesting and serialization across platforms, and to assess and streamline integrated workflows involving metadata.

The Head Librarian is a key member of a team responsible for ensuring that the descriptive metadata for the Libraries’ physical and digital content adheres to recognized national standards and keeps pace with emerging metadata and metadata management developments. Team members catalog library resources in a variety of formats and languages, and across a variety of content, technical platforms, and repositories internal and external to the Libraries. 

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $93,700 to $117,150; salary commensurate with relevant experience.  Please include both a cover letter and resume with your application.

Qualifications

Masters degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
Minimum of five years of original descriptive metadata work in an academic library or special collections environment.
Minimum two years experience in training, developing, and managing staff, and the ability to instruct diverse learning styles.
Substantive experience with RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, and USMARC formats.
Experience performing original cataloging in multiple bibliographic formats and languages, and a comprehensive understanding of copy cataloging issues.
Experience managing workflow in a multi-job classification environment.
Adept with technology and ability to adopt new and existing technologies to refine workflows.
Experience with special collections cataloging preferred.
Experience with material conservation programs and practices preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
