Assistant Librarian Circulation, Dighton Public Library (Dighton)

Description:
The Assistant Librarian Circulation is responsible for the circulation of library materials, front desk customer contact and for providing services to customers in an effective, courteous, and knowledgeable manner. The Assistant Librarian Circulation provides information, recommendations and materials management in support of library operations.

Essential Functions:
Responsible for charging, discharging and renewing library materials; Interlibrary loans and customer reserves including communication with patrons regarding availability of requested materials and notification of overdue materials.

Regularly provides reader advisory and ready reference service to adults and retrieval of materials at the public’s request. Responsible for developing and conducting adult outreach programs.

Conducts all front-line customer service for library patrons including registration of new customers, issuing of library cards; collection of fines and fees; scheduling of museum pass reserves. Gathers statistics and run reports as needed.

Assist with adult and reference collection development including new acquisitions and weeding. Returns materials to stacks. Maintains stacks in proper order.

Assists and answers questions of customers in person, by telephone, and by e-mail; makes referrals as appropriate.

Assists with promotion of library services. Responsible for maintenance of bulletin board notices and displays. Contributes to quarterly newsletters.

Manages visibility and accessibility of materials; displays new materials; maintains magazine rack with current issues; moves materials between three locations daily. Delivers library materials to homebound customers.

Assists with special projects, operational issues and other library departments as required.

Attends library workshops to improve skills and increase knowledge of library services, software and procedures.

Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

Supervision:
Works under the direction of the Library Director. 

Work Environment:
Work is performed under typical office and library conditions, subject to frequent interruptions to respond to requests for service; workload fluctuates seasonally; regular schedule requires evening and weekend hours. The employee operates standard office and library equipment. Performance of duties requires ongoing contact with library patrons, local youths, educational and community organizations, vendors and computer support technicians. Contacts are in person, in writing, and by telephone and involve an information exchange dialogue. Travel to multiple locations daily is also required, being able to operate a vehicle is necessary. 

Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree. Flexibility required; must be able to work a varying schedule to include some evenings and weekends. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 
Association training is available and encouraged. Valid driver’s license required and access to own vehicle daily. Ability to successfully pass Town of Dighton background check. 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL 
Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology; knowledge of reference sources and the organization and management of library reference operations. 

Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons; ability to work independently; ability to learn computer operations and related library databases; ability to troubleshoot computers and other library equipment. Ability to perform in public. Ability to work with children, educators, and caregivers. 

Excellent computer skills; customer service skills, oral and written communication skills, and organizational skills. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
Employees are regularly required to walk, stand, sit, speak, and hear; Able to reach with hands and arms as in picking up paper, files and library materials, such as books, videos, magazines and other common office objects. Employees may be required to stoop, bend and lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and safely climb to reach up to 90 inches in height, bend, stoop, use step stool, push loaded book trucks, stand or sit for a long period of time. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges; requires ability to read documents and use a computer. The physical ability to occasionally carry bins of books up and down stairs.
