Young Adult/Reference Librarian, Saugus Public Library (Saugus)

Under the direction of the Head of Reference and the Library Director, this position provides direct service to all patrons of the Reference Department and complete responsibility for programming and collection development for Young Adults. Reference functions range from patron instruction on the use of online databases and the automated systems to providing readers’ advisory service as well as dealing with a wide variety of reference questions.

 Essential Functions:  Daily job responsibilities/functions to include, but not limited to:

• Provide direct patron services to adults and youth.

• Select, purchase, and curate the Young Adult collection of books, CDs, and DVDs.        

• Process and catalog new materials for the Young Adult and CD collection.     

• Purchase Young Adult materials using the provided budget to maintain currency of the collection.        

• Maintain arrangement and order of the Young Adult Room.                       

• Create spreadsheets and reports as needed with statistical information and analysis about the Young Adult collection.         

• Plan, implement, and evaluate programs and activities to encourage young adult use of the library.                   

• Research topics and materials needed specifically for young adults in Saugus.  

• Maintain a welcoming and orderly atmosphere in a public space used by a variety of people with different needs and expectations.   

• Appraise and respond professionally to unexpected situations in the library.       

• Search resources, including online catalog, databases, internet and Commonwealth Catalog, to obtain desired materials and information for patrons of all ages.          

• Act as main point of contact for the Library’s Commonwealth Catalog account and maintain the records necessary to effectively manage its participation in the system.     

• Create displays, booklists, and publicity to increase public awareness of library materials and services.          

• Work in other departments as scheduled or as needed in case of emergency.        

• Contributes suggestions for improving library services.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough working knowledge of library principles and procedures.

• Extensive knowledge of general library technology products, including, but not limited to the internet, online databases, and automated library systems. 

• Working knowledge of PC hardware, word processing software and spreadsheets. 

• Must keep abreast of general library and automation trends associated with libraries.

• Successful experience working with young adults in a library or academic environment.

• Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks. 

• Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

• Able to exercise good judgment; interact with the public, co-workers, and vendors, with courtesy and tact, and project a positive attitude. 

• Must demonstrate initiative, creativity while paying attention to details and meeting deadlines.  

• Demonstrated proficiency and success working in a collaborative, team environment. 

• Show a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.  

Physical Requirements:  Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight. Tasks will involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.  Work is performed under typical library/office conditions; the noise level is moderate. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Library operating hours may require evening and weekend work. Operate standard office equipment including computers, peripherals, telephone, and other library equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum requirement of a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.  Previous successful experience with young adults in a public library is preferred.
