Library Director, Truro Public Library (Truro)

The Town of Truro is inviting qualified applicants to apply for the position of Library Director. Truro’s next Library
Director will serve as the organization’s expert and leader in library and information services and work with a high
level of autonomy provided by the Town Manager. They will also work collaboratively with other Town
departments, Board of Library Trustees, and local partners from the educational and non-profit community to
successfully execute the Select Board’s goals and objectives and the strategic vision and policies of the Board of
Library Trustees, and to direct the functions of the Library Department. They will be a key member of the Town
Administration’s team and involved in various Townwide issues and initiatives.

The essential role of this position is to develop and implement all actions necessary to maintain
a library, responsive to the community’s needs for information, education, and relevant
programs and services. Performs complex supervisory, administrative, and professional work
in planning, organizing and directing all library services and activities. Performs administrative
and managerial duties related to planning, personnel, budget, collection development, building
maintenance and all aspects of library operations and services under the supervision of the
Town Manager and in conformity with the policies established by the Board of Library
Trustees, professional standards, and state statutes and local bylaws. In conjunction with the
Town Manager makes recommendations and decisions regarding personnel procedures and
operations. In conjunction with the Library Board of Trustees, makes recommendations and
decisions regarding library policies and strategic plans. Performs all other related work as
required. Consults with Town Manager and Assistant Town Manager to ensure compliance
with all personnel procedures and contract requirements are met.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school; a minimum of five years’
experience in a public library and at least three years of progressively responsible experience
in library administration, including personnel management, fiscal management, program
development and facility management; or any equivalent combination of education and
experience.


Special Requirements:
Massachusetts Certificate of Librarianship from the MA Board of Library Commissioners


Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work;
and thorough knowledge of the management and organization of library operations including
administration, personnel and finance. Thorough knowledge of all technologies currently used
in libraries. Basic building maintenance and public administration management knowledge.
Working knowledge of computerization and appropriate library applications. Working
knowledge of state procurement laws.
Ability: Ability to supervise staff in an effective and supportive manner. Ability to establish
and maintain working relationships with organizations, departments and officials. Ability of
leadership, independent judgment, initiative and decision-making. Ability to communicate
effectively. Ability to operate standard office equipment.
Skill: Excellent planning and organizational skills. Catalog and reference skills. Skill in
pursuing and administering grants. Excellent oral communication skills. Proficient computer
skills and budgetary skills; interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
