Adult Services & Reference Librarian, Easthampton Public Library (Easthampton)

Definition
The Adult Services & Reference Librarian is responsible for Programming and Collection Development for Adult and Senior Citizen patrons of the Easthampton Public Library. 

Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of the Library Director, and in close collaboration with the Library Director, Youth Services Librarian, and Circulation & Operations Librarian.

Performs professional library functions of a responsible nature, involving substantial judgment and initiative in planning, developing, and managing adult library services. 

Supervisory Responsibilities
Serves as Adult Services team project leader, in collaboration with Circulation staff and programming support staff–collaborates on and supports projects and planning related to Adult Services. All staff report to Director, but AS&RL will coordinate project planning. In collaboration with other senior staff, acts as supervisor on site when Director and Youth Services Librarian are not present.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plans, develops, and maintains all aspects of the Library’s adult collection using standard review sources and considering patron requests. Coordinates the assignment and management of purchasing categories and other areas of collection development (special collections, etc). Not responsible for all purchasing and collection development, but expected to coordinate said activities.

Assists the Director in formulation of collection development policies and programs. In conjunction with the Director, assumes responsibility for communicating these standards and policies to staff and enforcing/monitoring their enactment.

Determines suitability of gift materials in areas of purchase for collection.

Plans and organizes educational and entertainment programs for adults, with assistance as necessary from Director and other staff. Assists, as appropriate, with the development of institutional long range planning for adult services, and ensures that adult programming and collection development support strategic Library goals and initiatives. 

Plans and organizes summer reading program for adults.

Works as part of team to maintain and update Library’s website as well as the Library’s social media tools.

Works with other community organizations to develop programming and events. Assists with Outreach events and planning as able.

Ensures appropriate publicity for Adult programs and events, assisted by circulation staff.

Provides reference and reader advisory services to patrons; responds to inquiries on procedures, in person and by telephone; provides direction, information and instruction.

Provides or organizes training and assistance to patrons in the use of computer hardware and software, the library database, electronic books and audiobook collections and the Internet.

Responsible in collaboration with Circulation Manager for maintenance of the collection through inventory, shelf reading, weeding and discarding materials.

Maintains, shares, and promotes Library’s historical collections and museum collections, in collaboration with other library staff. 

Assists at the circulation desk, as needed.

Represents the library on library network-related task forces, committees, and at training programs; attends informational and instructional meetings and workshops related to adult services.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Education and Experience
Master's Degree in Library Science preferred, Bachelor’s degree required; three years of professional library experience; supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work including automated circulation systems and information technology. 
Knowledge of classical and current trends in adult literature. 
Demonstrated knowledge of the organization and management of library operations.   
Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons of all ages and with staff. 
Ability to enforce library policies.
Ability to work independently and manage numerous, diverse tasks. 
Ability to express oneself orally and in writing. 
Ability to use a personal computer for spreadsheets and word processing.  
Possession of a flexible nature, as well as the ability to approach work with initiative, creativity, and positive energy.  
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Creative and thoughtful approach to Adult Services and programming. 
Project management experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop or reach with hands or arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and read a computer screen.  Equipment used includes personal computers, office machines, audio-visual equipment.
