Circulation & Operations Librarian, Easthampton Public Library (Easthampton)

Definition
The Circulation & Operations Librarian is responsible for managing the circulation and operational infrastructure of the Easthampton Public Library.

Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of the Library Director, and in close collaboration with the Library Director, Youth Services Librarian, and Adult Services & Reference Librarian.

Performs professional library functions of a responsible nature, involving substantial judgment and initiative in planning, developing, and managing circulation and operations services. 

Supervisory Responsibilities
Serves as Circulation and Operations team project leader, in collaboration with Circulation staff and other senior staff–collaborates on and supports projects and planning related to Circulation and related operations. All staff report to Director, but this position will coordinate project planning. In collaboration with other senior staff, acts as supervisor on site when Director and Youth Services Librarian are not present. 

Work Environment
Work is performed under typical library and office conditions; the workload is subject to minor fluctuations; regular library schedule requires evening work and may require weekend work. Schedule is flexible and can include up to 20% WFH time. Up to 40% of work time may include program and desk coverage–to be determined once person is on staff. 

Work consists of regular contact with library patrons and staff, vendors, library organizations and employees of other organizations the library partners with.  Contact is typically in person, by telephone, and by email.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Designs, streamlines, oversees, and implements all circulation and internal operational policy

Designs, streamlines, oversees, and coordinates statistics collection for library circulation, programming, and usage. 

Represents the library on library network-related task forces, committees, and at training programs; attends informational and instructional meetings and workshops related to circulation and operations. Serves as liaison with CWMARS and other professional organizations, helps to bring consortium wide initiatives to Library.

In coordination with Director and senior staff, designs and improves the adult Volunteer program, including intake, tracking, training, and other features.

Works with Director to maintain, purchase, and plan all aspects of Library hardware, software, and circulating hardware.

Communications–Social media, signage, displays, publicity for library features and services. Works as part of a team to maintain and update Library’s website as well as the Library’s social media tools.

Regular Outreach coordination (including Book Bike, delivery services, non-program events such as farmers mkt, etc)

Responsible in collaboration with Adult and Youth Services staff for maintenance of the collection through inventory, shelf reading, weeding and discarding materials.

In collaboration with the Adult Programming Librarian, may take responsibility for the purchasing and development of certain areas of the adult catalog.

Coordinates library-wide cataloging of new materials

Responsible for ILL and other non-standard circulation activities.

Responsible for the promotion of Library Databases and Learning Platforms, and for potential collection development in this area. 

Assists with Outreach events and planning as able.

Assists at the circulation desk, as needed.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
Master's Degree in Library Science preferred, Bachelor’s degree required; three years of professional library experience; supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work including automated circulation systems and information technology. 
Demonstrated knowledge of the organization and management of library operations.   
Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons of all ages and with staff. 
Ability to enforce library policies.
Ability to work independently and manage numerous, diverse tasks. 
Ability to express oneself orally and in writing. 
Ability to use a personal computer for spreadsheets and word processing.  
Possession of a flexible nature, as well as the ability to approach work with initiative, creativity, and positive energy.  
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Creative and thoughtful approach to Circulation and Operations. 
Project management experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop or reach with hands or arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and read a computer screen.  Equipment used includes personal computers, office machines, audio-visual equipment.
