Exhibit and Collections Manager, Wellesley Historical Society (Wellesley)

The Wellesley Historical Society seeks an enthusiastic, organized, and community-focused professional to serve as the Exhibit and Collections Manager. Position to begin immediately and is open until filled.

The Exhibit and Collections Manager will serve as the Society’s exhibit manager and will be responsible for exhibit research, design, and implementation. In addition, the position will support the Executive Director with the on-going management of the collection. We anticipate the role being 70% exhibit focused and 30% collections focused. The role reports to, and is supported by, Wellesley Historical Society’s Executive Director.

The Wellesley Historical Society will be opening its new facility, the Wellesley History Center, in September 2025. The Wellesley History Center’s first floor has four galleries in which the Exhibit and Collections Manager will develop and install three exhibits annually to engage the Wellesley community. Additionally, the Exhibit and Collections Manager will develop lending relationships with local historical societies and museums to enhance exhibits.

Wellesley Historical Society’s collections contain a wide-range of materials, including personal archives, photographs, textiles, objects, entomological specimens, and fine art. As collections manager, the incumbent will maintain physical and intellectual control of the existing collections as well as conduct on-going accessioning. Along with the Executive Director, the Exhibit and Collections Manager will support the Society’s educational programming, and staff the Wellesley History Center upon its completion.

Qualifications

Required qualifications 

  • A willingness to learn and engage the community
  • Graduate training in museum studies, archival management, or public history
  • Work experience in a historical society or museum environment
  • Knowledge of best practices for handling collection items
  • Proficiency with office productivity and collections management software
  • Attention to detail and ability to record information accurately and completely
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituents

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working with a wide range of materials including photographs, textiles, and artwork
  • Graduate-level experience conducting historical research
  • Familiarity with current collection management and preservation best practices
  • Prior experience developing interpretative materials
  • Familiarity with PastPerfect

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 40lbs, reach and work above the shoulders, and climb ladders and stairs.

$26.00  / hour

Salary Notes

(24 hours) per week, in-person, with occasional night and weekend hours. 12 paid vacation days per year.
