Adult Programming Librarian, Acton Memorial Library (Acton)

About the Role: The Town of Acton is seeking applicants for the full-time position of the Adult Programming Librarian. This position will be responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting engaging programs and services tailored to adults in our community. This role requires creativity, strong organizational skills, and a passion for lifelong learning. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with library staff and community organizations to enhance the library’s offerings and reach a diverse audience. This position may oversee volunteers or participants in the Senior Worker Program. Other duties of this position will include: collection development, marketing and publicity, reference and reader’s advisory services, customer service and staying abreast on emerging technologies and trends to assist patrons, data analysis for programs and feedback, training and support, professional development, and any other duties as required. General Duties and Responsibilities: 

Principle Duties:

Program Development Design: Plan, and execute a variety of programs and events for adults, including workshops, lectures, book clubs, and cultural events.

Outreach and Collaboration: Collaborate with other town departments, local schools, community organizations to promote library resources and services, establish partnerships, and enhance outreach efforts aimed at reaching and serving Acton residents effectively.

Community Engagement: Actively engage with community members to assess interests and needs, fostering partnerships with local organizations to enhance program offerings.

Collection Development: Collaborate with library staff to curate and maintain a relevant collection of adult materials, including books, periodicals, and digital resources.

Marketing and Publicity: Develop and implement effective marketing and promotional strategies to raise awareness of adult programs and services through social media, newsletters, and community outreach efforts, ensuring broad awareness and participation.

Reference and Reader’s Advisory: Provide friendly, knowledgeable reference assistance and reader's advisory services, helping patron’s navigate the library's resources, find information, and discover materials that match their interests and reading preferences.

Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to patrons, assisting with inquiries, research, and technology support.

Technology Integration: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends relevant to patrons, and incorporate innovative technologies and digital tools into library programs and services.

Data Analysis: Track program attendance and gather feedback to assess the impact of programs and make data-driven improvements.

Training and Support: Offer training sessions for patrons on various topics, including digital literacy and resource utilization.

Professional Development: Stay current with professional literature, trends, and best practices in librarianship through professional development activities, conferences, and networking opportunities. Is a member of the library’s various committees, including the programming committee, and will attend monthly meetings.

Other Duties: Provides professional and circulation services to the public at Memorial Library and other locations, as needed. Upon request of the library administration, performs other tasks requiring similar levels of skills and responsibility.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred. MLS Candidates nearing completion will also be considered. Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Proficiency in technology and digital resources. Creative problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to program development. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all patrons. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in library programming, community outreach, or a related field is a plus. Fluency in a world language.

Special Requirements: Work schedule includes one night a week and one Saturday every three weeks and occasional Sundays at time and a half. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by program and service schedules. Ability to travel occasionally to other sites in Acton, the Minuteman Library Network's Central Site in Natick, and other locations in eastern Massachusetts.
